April 2006 Spring is here, but we already knew that. I think we need to make a holiday out of changing the clocks for daylight savings. To me this is one of the best days of the year – we get all that extra daylight and suddenly life doesn’t feel quite as gloomy. It’s also a reminder to start inhaling all those allergy medicines because in just a few days things are going to get nasty. And this year…believe me things got rough. But I was armed this time around with more nasal inhalants than a, well, than someone with a lot of nasal inhalants (3 different kinds) – and some overpriced eye drops – and so far so good. Remarkably. It tastes nasty but it works oh so well. So despite the normal aches, pains and morning stiffness, things are looking up. Summer is right around the corner. This morning I sat up in bed, turned on the television, and marveled at how well I had predicted the weather for the last 48 hours. And then, more importantly, I tried to do it for the next 48 hours. Springtime is when meteorologists work overtime in New York – the atmosphere is unstable, rain shows up out of nowhere, temps rise and fall like an amusement park ride. But when you have the aches and pains I’ve been dealing with for the last 10 years…you learn to use your ‘gift’ wisely. So…as though I have nothing better to do on a Monday morning at 6:30, I predict the weather for the day. Why carry an umbrella when you don’t need one? Yesterday I knew there was a 6 hour window of partial clearing…and strutted the streets proudly without umbrella in tow. And this morning I knew that it was just another passing shower and not a reason to ruin a Monday – or a week for that matter. Instead I hunkered down, got going and haven’t looked back since. It’s not a science. It’s not an art. It’s not a gimmick. It’s what we live with. And if you’re like me, you rarely give it two thoughts. You-just-know-by-how-you-feel. And it’s a really cool thing. Maybe it’s the coolest part of arthritis. If only we got membership cards for this club. And Al Roker’s paycheck. |
