Saturday was my brother’s birthday. Justin’s birthday is like my second birthday. There are important dates in a person’s life – their birthday, maybe an anniversary or a memory of someone. For some reason December 3rd is one of those for me. I guess it’s because when we were growing up we were so close and he celebrated my October birthday and I celebrated his December birthday – but the bottom line is it’s hard to believe he’s already 23.

Not withstanding Justin’s birthday, it’s been a crazy few weeks. The travels continue (but alas, the end is in sight for this year), and my back is quietly working its way back into normalcy. I think at the peak of my travels – I don’t remember when but I certainly remember where – during a whirlwind visit to LA (among many other cities) I was at my worst. Standing straight for long periods of time hurt. Sitting still for long periods of time hurt. Nothing helped. And though I still feel my back hurt during the day or in the morning, it’s not nearly as bad as it was, and therefore, improving.

But is this pain the kind of pain we settle for? Is a backache just one crappy hand I’ve been dealt for the last four months? Should I just fold or do I bluff my way into the bigger pots and the bigger games?

Over the weekend I went back to my hometown to visit the grand parents of my friends Josh and Emily. It was the first time in a while I have spent Sunday time with grand parents and it made me wonder what I’ll be like when I’m that age. “Boy those sure are a lot of pills” I thought while I looked at all the bottles on the nightstand. Then, later on, I realized “boy, I sure take a lot of pills” after I glanced at my nightstand.

It was good, though, to take a few hours on a Sunday afternoon to help people who are confined to a house or apartment. It’s amazing what a little fresh air, some music, and a narcotic or two can do to brighten someone’s day.

And when I’m that age, bundle my pills and tell me it’s a vitamin.
