Hustlin’ Hustlin’

Unless you subscribe to Arthritis Today magazine, you would be hard pressed to name a celebrity who has arthritis. For some reason, people would rather admit to losing a breast, sitting in a chair for hours undergoing chemotherapy, or even battling depression, before they will admit that their joints and muscles ache.

But thanks to the 24-hour news cycle, the social media savvy of today’s stars and perhaps a little bit of a “screw what other people think” attitude, we can now look to Lady Gaga and Nick Cannon as examples of a new kind of celebrity that isn’t afraid to admit the secrets that lie within their cells.

Nick Cannon hasn’t stopped moving since he was diagnosed with lupus nephritis. He is battling his disease head on. He has visited Hustlin' Hustlin'with lupus organizations and made a powerful decision to share his struggle with the world. He could hide. Or he could elevate his stature in and outside of Hollywood by becoming something more than just another celebrity.

For some reason, celebrities would rather admit to losing a breast, sitting in a chair for hours undergoing chemotherapy, or even battling depression, before they will admit that their joints and muscles ache.

While other celebs are cashing in on multiple feature interviews on morning news shows along with books and reality shows to highlight their illness (shove it down our throats?), Nick has filmed and edited his journey and posted it on his website.

There is something refreshing about watching Nick’s story, largely filmed on his phone. It has the immediacy and raw accessibility of a friend’s video post on Facebook. The situations aren’t contrived, the emotions you feel aren’t compelled by anything other than his reality. A reality that you and I know so well.

Take a look at Nick’s NCredible Health Hustle and tweet or post a thanks so he knows we are counting on him to continue raising awareness of lupus.
