Dr. Mark Young, a pain, physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, is the author of "Women and Pain.” He believes best pain management takes a holistic approach
Young: “Many in the community have come to the recognition that Opioids should play a last resort role in the management of pain. Yes, they do have an important role in select patients. However, as clinicians, we go ‘lower than we go slow.' We start out with the least invasive, the least deleterious modalities and we use everything that nature has to offer. We use traditional treatments and with respect to Opioids, we do use them, however, we use them as a last resort for chronic pain patients”
Dr. Young believes that an important part of understanding why it hurts is being able to adequately describe your pain to your healthcare provider.
