Meet Donna Sell Barton, CreakyJoints House Poet
Donna Sell Barton grew up in the Ozark mountains of Missouri. She’s in her early fifties, married to the love-able yard gnome (mentioned often in her poems), a mother, a grandmother... and works as a graphic designer. She was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in April of 2012.
“I was diagnosed with RA on April 4th, 2012 in Parkland Hospital in Farmington, MO,” says Donna. “Received my diagnosis on floor 3 while my grandson was born on floor 1.”
A person who tries to be happy no matter her circumstances, Donna decided to poke fun of her situation by writing a silly poem ranting about her new disease. She typed it on an RA support group page. It was then she realized that other people with RA really needed to laugh too.
In October of 2012, Donna started her popular Facebook page “Giggles Over Tears With RA” where she tries to post a new poem and graphic every day. ( https://www.facebook.com/GigglesOverTearsWithRa )
People began requesting that Donna bring her poems together in a collection so “Funny How it Hurts” was born as an e-book. The illustrations in the book are by Kathleen Acker, who also has RA and shares Donna’s zest for laughter.
Now Donna has accepted CreakyJoints offer to become our Poet-in-Residence. We are thrilled to have her as House Poet and look forward to her bringing smiles to thousands more battling chronic disease.
