What is everyone reading?

Posted by TessaD at February 12. 2009

Okay folks, it is 12:21 AM eastern time and once again I was awoken by night sweats and pain in my legs.

So since I am bored and am limited on typing and what I can do around the house, I have found reading takes up all my time.  I received the Kindle for Christmas so I have downloaded a ton of books and just finished Carolan's book Beaudry's Ghost.  (I really recommend it...did today at PT too).

So I decided to read Mary Higgins Clark - The Lottery Winner which is a book of her short stories with one of my favorite characters Alvirah and Willy McMeehan they were common working folks that won 40 Million dollars in the NYC Lottery (sorry Seth they won don't waste your money).

Is there anyone else reading any fiction or non-fiction? If so what are you reading and what do you recommend?

Tess, the 1 armed, stalking, bored bandit!!  (thats for Kate and Carolan, I keep stalking both of them on the board).

PS: Seth how do you let people like me on this board???

Well, you're not really a stalker until you start sending presents. LOTS of presents. Just sayin'. [batting eyes]

Right now, since Imbolc just passed, I have several books about Brighid by my bed (actually, since hubby is out of town again, they're IN bed with me, on his side. I know, weird. LOL)

Brighid's Healing: Irelands' Celtic Medicine Tradition

Candlemas: Feast of Flames

Also:
Sophia: Goddess of Wisdom, Bride of God

I'm on the market for some new reading material... right now I just dip into "Gig" which I love- its a book with 2-3 page interviews with a really huge cross section of people, all about their jobs. The jobs go from someone working at McDonalds, to college professors, to chicken factory workers, to strippers, to truck drivers, to drug reps and everything in between. It is fascinating! Also, its in small bursts which makes it good for my pre-bedtime reading.

Maybe I'll check out some of your ideas though...!

Kate,

I read mostly fiction the book of short stories by Mary Higgins Clark - The Lottery Winner is cute.

I am now reading The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb.

Carolan, Don't feel bad I used to do the same thing until I got my Kindle now that is on hubby's side of the bed with about 50 books loaded.

I like fast-paced, funny thrillers, so there's a lot of Carl Haissen in my house.  It's nice, you'll always be smarter than the bad guy, the weather is fantastic in the books (usually the Keys, or Miami area), and the stories are stringers.

I've been recently reading the Chicken soup for the soul books. Being newly engaged I picked up the one for the couples soul and love stories one :)  So far I love them. Just short little real life stories

Ladies,

I started reading Kosher Sutra it is quiet interesting... Take a look at it on amazon.com

Kate or Kati can't remember which one stated they jsut got a mini laptop...well after the last couple of months and the Pain Management and Rehab have determined I have lost 50% of my strength in my hands and wrists, my hubby broke down and used part of or Tax refund to buy me this new mini laptop. It is small so I am still getting used to it only have had it for about 2 hours now.

The keys are easy to type on and it only weighs 3 lbs with the battery in it. Big difference from the other laptops.

Though my Kindle still only weighs in at 10 oz's for reading.

I just got a new book called Human Traces, I was at a talk and someone used a quote from it that I thought was really interesting, so I'm going to see how it goes. Other than that I've been reading a bunch of historical fiction because somehow I have developed a fixation on the wives of Henry the 8th!

it wasn't me who got the mini laptop, that was Kati, but I'm really curious about them- is it hard to type on with keys close together?

Kate I went to Bestbuy to test the keyboards. I didn't like the keyboard on the HP or the Vsaio or Sony (plus they are really expensive).  Since i like the chicklet keys they  don't require you to have to press them that hard...and we all know that can be challenging for us.

I had it narrowed down to the Asus Eee PC 10.2" and the Dell Inspiron 10.2" the prices were very close at 350 and 400.. I went with the Asus since i like the style and sleekness and was 50.00 less expensive so I used that 50.00 and got the extended warranty.

Give me a call when your ready to go look at them I would be more than happy to review your choices with you. (you should stll have my cell if not I will send it to you).  Also  check out www.cnet.com for any electronic referals.  Plus Asus was one of the first on the market with netbooks so they have gotten it right this time and I don'tneed a lot of bells and whistles on a minilaptop.

Yeah, I would definitely want to check something out in person before buying one, good idea. My main dilemma is that I am a hard core Mac user, problem is, the smallest lightest mac (the macbook air) is REALLY expensive, and I'd love something lighter and easier to carry around. If I'm looking seriously I'll give you a call for sure- thanks!

Kate, I have a Mac and Intel boxes here and your right the Air was way out of my price range.  Give me a call if you want when your getting ready to go out and look.

hi everyone! Some great reads: Glass Houses, Shutter Island, Loving Frank, stories by Gary Paulsen or Lincoln Barclay or Elizabeth George or Agatha Christie...I love to escape my life for a few hours into another world.

I second the Shutter Island recommendation!  Plus the movie is about to come out.

I've been reading the thriller/mystery  "The Girl Who..."  books by Stieg Larsson.  The first is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the second is the Girl who played with fire.  I'm still reading the second one, but my boyfriend loves the books so much that he ordered the 3rd book from amazon UK and had it shipped.  He says the 3rd is also good.

Hey folks I just finished the Series by Kate Jackson a British author The Sophie Green Mysteries.  It is similar to the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich; but with all British antic's I had to ask Dozey Rosey (June) for the meaning of the slang....

I am now reading the 4th book in the Jason Bourne series by Robert Ludlum.  As well as the Alex Cross series.

Awaiting the next Clive Cussler and other authors for their next books in the series I am reading about 10 at this point.

You gotta love eReaders...  Oh yea I read all the books by Carolan Ivey!!!  Try them!!!
