My son and I used to have conversations all night long -- giggling and telling jokes, he telling me about his day, his dreams, the future. But we don't talk anymore. One day it just stopped. What can I do to bring that back? -- Mary in Maine
The truth is you may never get those specific conversations back. Children contain such gleeful love for life and all its possibilities -- a young son thinks nothing of his mother as a close friend. As our babes mature, it is natural for them to start erecting both physical and emotional barriers. We don't want to coddle them because, without spreading their wings, how will they ever learn to fly? To leave the nest? The best you can do is try to elicit conversation on his terms. Find something -- anything -- about which he's interested. It may not be a topic about which you know anything ... but if you're genuinely interested in what he has to say, he just may captivate his audience once more.
