Oh, the pain we endure

I still haven’t fully recovered—and I’m beginning to think recovery is just as hard as being sick, and may last even longer

Today was D-day. Nothing to do with world history. Though you could say there is an ongoing battle on top of my scalp. It was dermatologist day — the day every six weeks when I return to my hilarious British dermatologist for 30+ steroid injections in my head. Though he thought it was pretty funny that I was sitting on my butt at home for six weeks during my recent flare-up, I wasn’t laughing when he started his procedure.

After a little application of “numbing” cream, my doctor was out of the gate like a greyhound and puncturing each bald patch of my scalp like it was a race to the finish line. I usually don’t use the numbing cream — which he always thought was crazy — and now I understand why. He was stabbing my head like it was a voodoo doll or pin cushion. I was secretly wishing one of his residents was doing the injections.

It got me thinking about the pain we endure for the good of our health. How many of you endure injections in your knees or elbows to reduce inflammation or fluid build-up? And what about discomfort? Sometimes swallowing 20 medications a day doesn’t quite register as painful but it sure isn’t pleasant.

Lately I’ve been working very hard to recover from my recent flare-up of lupus and scleroderma and it’s required a lot of hard work. I’ve worked hard with my personal trainer, implemented changes to better manage my sleep schedule and add naps, added back activities to my schedule incrementally and tried not to push myself to extreme limits. I still haven’t fully recovered—and I’m beginning to think recovery is just as hard as being sick, and may last even longer.

To get through it all I think of what my boyfriend always says, “whatever doesn’t kill you, hopefully makes for a good story.”
